Question:
I met this amazing guy online but he lives a few hours away and
I can’t decide whether it’s worth pursuing a relationship with
him. He is definitely my type and it’s so hard to find a guy
that is actually good looking, well educated, and funny.
We have met once and had an amazing date.
He has an established career where he lives and I have no
interest in moving. Should I bother going out with him again?
Answer:
It’s wonderful you have met a guy you’re excited about. As you
know, meeting someone you are interested in is often half the
battle. Unfortunately, love is often not as simple as we want it
to be. Many people struggle with whether to maintain or even
bother pursuing long-distance relationships. There is never an
easy answer. For every couple that has lived happily ever after
and will tell you that it's worth it, there is another couple
that went through a messy break-up and has sworn off
long-distance relationships for good.
I, however, would not let distance get in the way of the
opportunity for a great relationship. Although it does
complicate things, it is WELL worth it for the right person.
Geography has nothing to do with love. You have to give yourself
the gift of giving this a chance. Some of the most beautiful
romances I know of were started long distance and that never
stopped them from falling in love. In fact, if you can build a
strong relationship with the added hurdle of living long
distance, that is an even greater testament to your
relationship. No one you meet is ever going to be “perfect” and
meet all of your ideal criteria. Beginning any relationship
takes a leap of faith and in this situation I think you’d be
crazy not to take that leap.
You really have nothing to lose by pursuing the relationship.
Right now you say you don't want to move and that he would not
consider moving to your city. But you have met only once. I
assure you that if you fall in love, location will become much
less of an issue and your priority will be building a life with
him, wherever that may be. Give yourself a chance to fall in
love. Talk on the phone, email and meet as often as you can. Let
time and nature determine what will happen with the two of you.
Eventually, you will know whether it is worth it to move forward
or not.
Good luck.
Best wishes,
