Revenge On The Stupid, Late, Better Treated Co-worker

Dear RG,
I work in the IT field, and have worked in this field for nearly my entire professional career.

I know that any IT position requires dealing with those that are not technically inclined, which can be very difficult to deal with at times. However, my problem is not with an end-user, but a co-worker.

The co-worker in question is a woman, in a department where there are only three total. She's devious and takes advantage of everyone and everything she can, and as often as possible. Her job performance is horrible, and for the life of me I can't understand why she still has a job. Her hours are 8-5, but she couldn't manage to make it to work by 8 in the morning, so our department manager moved her hours to 8:30-5:30. After several more months of her still arriving late, her hours were moved to 9-6.

It's been several months since then and she still isn't coming in "on time", she arrives at 10:30-11:00, and still nothing has been done about it. Her job is development, however most of what she writes is buggy and doesn't work and fails quite often. She's complained about being worked "too hard", and the department has hired a contractor to do her work for her now, in the guise of "helping her get caught up".

As if that wasn't enough, the decision has now been made to hire her a full time assistant. I can speak from my personal experience that there are many others in our department that are completely overworked, myself included. Working twelve hours a day, if not more, and then working from home is the norm, and to a certain extent I can accept that is just the way it is in my field. However, my job responsibilities continue to increase, and when I requested assistance, whether from a contractor, or temporary employee, I was turned down.

I've taken my complaints about her performance to my immediate boss, who has basically told me that they looked into letting her go and were told by HR that they can't because she works her 40 hours a week.

In several other conversations he has stated that she gets her work accomplished, which I know for a fact is a lie. She does, however, suck up to my boss, and the department manager constantly, which I can only guess is the reason she's still employed.

To make matters worse, she has an intense dislike for me. I come in on time, do my work, and do my best at everything I do. I get the distinct impression that if I push my complaint up the chain, that somehow I'll be the one fired.

What I want is for her to be fired from the company, or short of that, for her to quit. I like my job, and enjoy doing it, which I know most people can't say, but she's making it unbearable for me. I'm searching for new employment because of her, and will probably end up in a position that I hate, while she cruises on without a care in the world. Please help!
Signed,
Frustrated IT Guy

Hi Frustrated IT Guy,
You certainly have been caught in a big black hole.
Having a worthless co-worker treated with kid gloves makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me.
Maybe she is blackmailing the bosses?
I’d like to know too why she is “untouchable”.
Start there, find out all the facts without being found out that you are doing this.
Start a hidden dossier, and get help from others that are disgruntled about her unfair treatment, maybe they have some info on her that you are not yet aware of. Keep track of her comings and goings, missed work, everything you can think of.

Actual revenge on her will not work, because no matter what you do, unless the act takes place outside of work, you will be caught.

Although I would try to find her another job elsewhere… maybe even a few untraceable phone calls (like www.RevengeCall.com) from a supposedly better employer offering her a job. Talk her up for a big pay raise, easier work hours, whatever it takes to make the job offer seem legitimate.
Then get her out of the office for this job interview that doesn’t exist!

There may be other ways to get your revenge but I think this is the safest and will reflect very poorly on her current work record should she miss work for this.
It could be the straw that broke the camel’s back!
