Friday’s Conversation Topics

Welcome to another weekly wrap-up of this week’s best subjects to talk about. When you meet someone it’s natural to talk to them, right? But some people freeze up because they can’t think of something interesting to say, and we all know that the pregnant pause after the “Hello” is the big white elephant in the room that make your chances of making a positive impression near to zero. So read up and have something to talk about tonight and this weekend.

- Woman trapped in airport for 8 days due to airline baggage fees. If you’re broke and traveling by plane to your new life all so full of hope and promise, don’t start your journey with $30.00 in your pocket because at the airport those hidden baggage fees will stop you from boarding and you may end up with 8 days of hell just as Terri Weissinger was.

- Woman Allegedly Lights Neighbor’s House on Fire After Being ‘De-Friended’ on Facebook. A woman from Iowa was arrested today after allegedly lighting her neighbor’s house on fire in retaliation for being ‘de-friended’ on the popular social networking site Facebook. Certainly being de-friended lets you know who your friends really are, but this payback is too much.

- Martin Kippenberger art piece “When It Starts Dripping From the Ceiling” mopped up. Your job really is on the line when you’ve cleaned up a floor spill that was actually a $1 million piece of art on display in a museum unless you can convince your boss (and the insurance company) that it was an honest mistake.

Facebook is Better Than Sex: Dating in the News

Catch Him & Keep Him

Catch Him & Keep Him - Get Yours Now!

1 In 5 Women Choose Facebook Over Sex
When posed the question, “what would you rather live without for one full week: sex or Facebook…”, one might believe that it is a simple answer. Turns out that 1 in 5 woman might not agree with what you think the answer might be. The women’s magazine, Cosmopolitan, polled 2,000 readers about what they would be willing to give up for seven days; sex, television, their computer, texting and, of course, Facebook. While 20 percent of the responses claimed that they preferred keeping Facebook rather than sex, it was also shown that 57 percent and 50 percent refused to give up their computer or cell phone for intimate relations.

Unattractive to Women? Fat Chance!
Rich, portly, men with beautiful women on their arms are no rarity in today’s society. In fact, some might even argue it’s the norm. According to a recent study, this coupling can be explained by simple math. Pierre-Andre Chiappori, an economics professor at Columbia University, writes in his working paper, “Fatter Attraction: Anthropometric and Socioeconomic Matching on the Marriage Market,” that a little extra cushion around the waist on a man is not a big deal to attractive women, as long as he’s rich. For women, this model is flipped – men will overlook extra weight in a woman with more education.

This week has shown us the final bloody moments of Libya’s Colonel Gadhafi and the liberation of Libya’s people has been achieved. Whether they remain on the road to true freedom remains to be seen, just as Egypt’s people now are being lost to events that were supposed to be thrown out with their tyrant of a ruler and his cronies. We live in interesting times my friend, the events of which will forever change our world and destiny. Read these top news stories from the past week and be ready with something to talk about this weekend.

Gadhafi’s demise and the Arab Spring – CNN has done a great job wrapping up recent events (to date) so you should start with this article.

Not a Facebook member? You could still be on Facebook – Allegations of “shadow profiles” is an interesting complaints against the world’s most popular online destination. I don’t think we’ll ever have private lives again with so much information online, tucked away in public files that can be accessed for a small fee. Your best opportunity is to have such a common name that tracking you becomes an almost endless task of misdirection and duplicity.

Today is ‘Judgement Day’, again – Yes, it’s true and you can read about it here, but hurry, we may not be here tomorrow.

Man in US creates 130 Facebook accounts to harass ex-girlfriend – A 22-year-old man from Los Angeles in the United States could be the first to be convicted for harassing his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend by creating fake online accounts, including 130 Facebook accounts.

Friday’s Popular Conversation Topics

This week’s news has not held back anything, really. I’ve tried to make up stuff like this but you can never outdo reality. Enjoy the read and talk it up this weekend.

- Indian Navy sailors sink their own warship – But it’s not what you think. It was a simple “family day at sea” as the navy personnel shared the day with family members. On the way back to harbor the warship, INS Vindhyagiri (a 3,000-ton warship) was hit by another ship and damaged. As it was towed farther into the harbor a fire broke out and, strangely, as the fire was being put out too much water was pumped into the ship and it was accidentally sunk. Well, at least it wasn’t an accidental nuclear accident, or sunk by aliens… right?

- “Dating service” (or art?) scrapes user profiles and make them members of their dating service. In this day and age it’s easy to take so-called public information and do anything with it. But I expect lawsuits to fly soon enough. *I purposefully did not link directly to the web site but only the news article.

- Might be snow for the Super Bowl in Dallas on Sunday. Only in Texas you say? Nope, it’s everywhere, almost. Check out these Super Bowl apps too.

- Too stupid to have sex? In Canada a judge bars a man from having sex because his IQ is too low. Yeah, right.

- “Two and a Half Men” will continue with or without Charlie Sheen, maybe… CBS cares.

Social: Dating Profile Headline of the Day

Thursday

In the wacky world that is our life can you believe some of the events that are grabbing the headlines?

Mark Zuckererg’s Facebook account get’s hacked, and now Facebook is going to sell ads along with your posts and updates. We know that privacy means nothing to this company, and we know we forfeit some of our private lives by openly publishing personal information to our Facebook accounts but come on, let us at least try to openly keep aspects private.

A dog is found encased in a block of ice, on a man’s lawn. Now, I understand the universal stance against animal cruelty but can’t we have such news stories that include arrest info or a way to supply tips towards the apprehension of these grotesque criminals?

Events like these make me want to just shut the doors and windows and wait for the end times (unless this is it now).

When you have an active social and dating life you won’t feel the urge to bolt yourself inside because you’ll have a lot of people to share your concerns and insights with.

Let’s get stated on increasing our social activity with a fun headline that will make people need to meet you, post this:
“Let’s get it started!”

Have a great day!

People at play: Dating Profile Headline of the Day

People at play

People at play

Monday

Sign up or Log in… more and more websites are asking you to sign up or log in to see personalized content, even so much as sharing your information across many web sites. (We don’t do that here, too much!)

The big giant is, of course, Facebook which has it’s fingers in hundreds of other websites for friend recommendations and such. It’s a nice feature, without a doubt, because it does keep you connected with your social circle. But unless you know how much sharing of your information you are really doing, you might want to logout or turn off the sharing features until you’re more comfortable with all of this.

We are constantly being barraged with messages to buy things and having these sales pitches customized without your complete consent may not be the best thing in the world (online), don’t you agree? And here’s a tip if you’re searching for a job: do a search for yourself and see what comes up. A future employer will likely do the same thing so you want to see what they’ll find.

You might also want to do a “Super logout” at Facebook, if your page is very personal or has content you particularily wouldn’t want an employer reading about you. The “Super logout” is simply deactivating your account. This does not delete your account and you can re-activate it at a later time, but this technique stops people from seeing anything about you on Facebook which is what you’d want. Click on “Account” and “Account settings” and choose “Deactivate account” and you’re done.

Many online dating services also allow you to put your dating profile into a “hidden” state, which is great if you’ve found a few dates and don’t want to be seen as still looking for more, so one click to hide your profile and another click to be available again.

As far as your online dating profile the amount of information about you made available depends on the service and how they are set up as far as the required information and the optional information is displayed. But just because the question is asked don’t think you absolutely have to provide an answer. Many dating services have an “Ask me later” option for some questions, so feel free to use it as you will.

My headline suggestion for you today is this:
“Please ask me anything, this could be the start of something great!”

Have a great day!

Rockmelt can’t find Facebook

Rockmelt can't find Facebook

Rockmelt can't find Facebook

So what do you do when the new Rockmelt browser, that has gotten so much attention lately, can’t find Facebook on which the browser is supposed to be so well integrated with?

I know a lot of things but I don’t know the answer for this one. it’s a very plain error message though. “Not Found”, rather basic and frightening in it’s perspective.

I do like the Rockmelt browser otherwise. It’s using the Google Chrome engine, so it looks like the browser Chrome, which I am hoping I can figure out how to change the plain-jane browser look.

I do like the social features and having all my Facebook links right at hand, making me even more lazy I don’t have to even click between browser tabs anymore…LOL.

You’ll need to request an invite to test Rockmelt and if you’re given the approval you can then invite 3 friends to try Rockmelt too. Nothing like making a social browser a little more social, eh?

I just hope Rockmelt can find Facebook again soon…..

Of course, my next move was to close and restart Rockmelt, so imagine my surprise when this “Not Found” error page showed up… I guess if you can’t access Facebook (which seems to happen at least 5 nights out of 7 for anywhere from a few minutes to several hours) you can’t even start Rockmelt… looks like life sucks for this browser!

Rockmelt will not start!

Rockmelt will not start!

Facebook will block photos of your ex

In a move none too soon, Facebook will begin a roll-out to all users to start NOT showing pictures of your ex (the one that used to be your main squeeze) tied to your account.

No more, hopefully, will Facebook continue to torture you with pictures of your ex with their new beau.

Quote from InsideFacebook.com:
… Facebook’s project manager in charge of photos, Sam Odio, commented on the post saying, “Hi All – I’d like to let you know that we’re listening to your feedback. The photo memories product no longer shows tagged photos of your friends if you were previously in a relationship with them.” While users may still see Photo Memories of their former romantic partners if they didn’t declare the relationship on Facebook, as well of their current partner with that person’s former partners, the change should help heal the heartache for many users.
End quote

I think Sam Odio is onto something great here.
