- One in five people drop their phones in the toilet. Sorry, no stats on how many of those people know how to dry out a phone and be able to keep using it or they just replace it under warranty using some weird water-explanation. (Note: iPhones can detect submersion and will “call home” to say the warranty has been voided. It’s true.)

- Fake high-end computer stores. We’ve all be inundated with stories of fake goods being sold, ladies handbags, high priced footwear, you name it, if it’s high priced it’s faked and sold. China, however, has outdone all of us, both in suspected fakery and now in complete top to bottom fraudulent stores. Yes, this is a story about entire Apple stores being opened up in China, complete with imitated furnishings and even unknowing (and possibly un-geeky) sales staff.

Mobile dating is alive and well

I’ve had my Android phone (HTC Desire) for a few weeks now and I have to say that I’m absolutely in love with it, if you can love a phone.

The Apple iPhone 4 was never an option for me, not because of availability but simply because I didn’t like the idea of everything my internet capable phone could do would have to be “approved” by Apple. Google, for better or worse, has a much more open market for apps, which I do appreciate. After all, the internet is based on a certain amount of freedom, right? Why surrender that freedom to a single company in the name of a dollar?

That being said I do not have, right now, a good count of the dating services available through an iPhone app, but the Google market has at least 20 apps for mobile access to dating, chatting and meeting people.

Certainly this shows what direction dating, and mobile computing as a whole, is headed. It has been said that sex drives computer technology as far as chasing dollars goes and I think there is some truth to that. If the sex industry (and dating is the main stream but smaller component of online sex) can make money on it then it’s a given that the “straight” computer community will follow.

That being said, more pressure than ever is put on you for not only which dating service you put your efforts into but also that you’re available when someone is looking for you, as they will be looking on their phone. Friday and Saturday nights are great times for mobile matches especially when you’re at an event and want to share the experience with someone that you can connect with at the same event.

And, all things being equal, you’re going to need to have regular and timely updates to what you’re doing for your mobile dating app, or portion of your regular online dating profile, to be effective.

This also means a headline to your profile that encourages immediate actions from the person that reads it. An example would be that you’re at a concert so you update your profile to not only where you are but how you like the show, encouraging reply messages to your updates so you have a common interest and maybe a reason to meet after the show.

Hey, it happens and you could meet your match just because you added a real-time event to your dating profile.

Today’s headline suggestion is a few words to help you get noticed, immediately, and make a connection and maybe a new friend. Post this:
“Meet me up after the (name of the ) show at (place).”

- The Big Bang Followed by The Big Wheeze – The astrophysicists have figured it all out: 13.7 billion years ago (+/- 2%) is when this whole thing started. And if you want to appear intelligent, you’ll read this article and learn something, even if it isn’t all figured out yet.

- Goose with arrow in neck evades capture again. With pictures. This is one of those stories that you have to read (and see) to believe.

When you can talk about current event you score major points on the “friendship scale” so it’s worth the few minutes to breeze through these fun and informative news links I have selected for this week’s conversation topics.

- Surprise, surprise, Michael Jackson’s doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, is finally charged with a crime. Is there any doubt that something went horribly wrong last summer? And with the autopsy report being released we sure learn more than needed about MJ’s private life. And seriously, does anyone believe that the show “Jackson Family Dynasty” was anything more than taking advantage of the circumstances and renewed interest in Michael Jackson? Just wondering.

- New Orleans Saints win the Superbowl. But did you see all the commercials? And the halftime show? And what about that parade? Well, catch up then, this is still discussable!

- Maybe your one of the millions that have an Apple iPhone. And maybe you live where the temperature dives down real low too. Well, how can you use your iPhone when you have gloves on? The answer, of course, is that you can’t. The touch screen needs the conductivity of your fingers to know what you want, what you’re pressing. If you’re in this predicament, here’s your answer. You’ll be shocked! And maybe a little bit grateful too…

- Google enters the social networking scene with a “Buzz”…. have you started yet? Millions already have. And Facebook fights back.

- Marines in Afghanistan deploy “The Breacher”, a 72-ton, 40-foot (12-meter)-long Assault Breacher Vehicle that carry a 15-foot (4.5-meter) -wide plow supported by metallic skis that glide on the dirt, digging a safety lane through the numerous minefields laid by the Taliban.

I hope you have nig plans for tonight… it is Superbowl weekend after all, a lot of what happens tonight will determine where and with whom you see the game with on Sunday.
