Make Your Headline Pop By Randy B. Hecht (Chemistry.com columnist)

Chemistry.comLonely? Looking for love? Seeking your match? If your headline can't express anything more creative than that, then you're missing a huge opportunity to stand out from the crowd—a crowd that includes millions of singles who also are lonely, looking for love and seeking their matches.

Making your headline special

What makes a headline hot? The same qualities that make you special: Your unique sense of humor; your captivating smile; your brilliant brain, your good heart...

Someone out there is looking for what you've got. To receive more responses — and attract the kind of matches you really want to meet — try these 10 tricks to revise your headline and grab someone's attention:

1. Sell yourself
Ask your friends what they think a prospective date would find most attractive about you. Then don't be shy; put those qualities out there for your match to see.

2. Be yourself
Remember, the real you has to live up to that headline.

3. Be original
Anyone can (and does) say "Seeking My Soul Mate." Ask yourself, "Would this headline make me want to click through to learn more?" If the answer is no, dig deeper.

4. Turn on the charm
In online dating, unless your first impression is positive, it may also be your last. Be sure your headline tempts singles to learn more about you.

5. Be positive
Talk about what you have to give, not about what you want your match to give you.

6. Be accessible
If you oversell yourself, your prospective matches will either perceive that they're out of your league or that your ego's out of theirs.

7. Go for a laugh
Everyone finds a sense of humor sexy, and it's a great way to "break the ice." If you can make someone laugh or smile, you've already scored big points.

8. Be reasonable
If you say you're looking for a princess or a knight in shining armor, your match may shy away from you on the grounds that no one can live up to your fantasies. Even words like "gorgeous" can scare away a prospective date.

9. Be careful
Errors in spelling and grammar count, and an ill-placed typo can count you out. You don't have to be perfect, but your headline should be.

10. Be innovative
Use some of these sample headlines to inspire your own creation:

  • Movie-lover seeks hand to hold until the last credits roll

  • Good listener eager to hear the sound of your voice

  • Let me inspire that great smile of yours!

  • Brainy gal seeks smart connection

  • Photographer ready to focus all his attention on you

  • Happy with my life... but will be happier when it's our life

  • Hopeless romantic is a contradiction in terms

  • Great cook wants to add some spice to your life

  • Marathoner hopes to run into lifelong love with you

  • Dating can be fun, and I can prove it!
