Are You Still Bogged Down With Yesterday's Baggage?

By John J.O’Callaghan

Take a look over your shoulder—so to speak—to see what--if any—unwanted baggage you may still be carrying around?

Things like hate, anger, greed, bitterness, envy, despair, or harboring a grudge for years and plotting revenge, are like old bags of garbage that may be weighing you down and slowing your progress.

They are like your ex. Stale bread and yesterdays bad news!

Nothing that has happened in the past can effect you today--unless you personally let it.

Don’t allow too much of yesterday to take up too much of your today. Cherish the past--by all means--but you don't want to live there. You want to live for today--and hope for tomorrow!

When I lived in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, I used to walk my dog along the seafront every morning.

In Ireland, it is considered normal to smile at everyone you meet and wish them a “Good Morning” or “Good Evening” as appropriate.

I used to meet this nun (later on I discovered she was not an ordinary nun but the Mother Superior at the local Convent) every day. After we got used to seeing each other, I said:

“Do you mind if I walk with you today, sister?”

“Ah no” she replied. “Sure now I’d be delighted.”

“I can’t help noticing that you have a happy face and a lovely smile. Would you care to tell me what makes you so happy?” I asked.

“Happiness is dependent on one's attitude more than anything else” she replied. “Good and bad things happen to people all the time.

"When misfortune happens you have two choices. You can give in to it and allow it to make you miserable, or, you can think, “This too will pass,” and seek to find the good seed that is hidden in every misfortune.

“When I was younger I used to take care of an old priest. He was crippled with arthritis and could only hobble about. But, he was always cheerful and he always had a smile on his face.

"So, I asked him the same question you just asked me. He pointed to a message on a wall plaque and said,

“Read it to me.”

"I took that message to heart and made it my philosophy. Here’s the message:

'Today is the tomorrow I was so worried about yesterday, and all is well.'"
