Originally reviewed March 2000, the Yahoo Personals service has grown from being a basic free service serving only America to a comprehensive communications system for single people in America and Canada. One drawback to their online personals is membership with Yahoo's main services is mandatory. If you want to place your free profile, you have to be a Yahoo member. Not that it's entirely a bad thing, they do offer a lot of services and features that you could make very good use of, but it does add a couple off steps if all you want to do is place your profile online.

Posting a profile at Yahoo Personals is easy once you've joined up as a member of the main Yahoo web service. It's a simple 7 steps to get your profile online and once it's approved (usually about 24 hours) you'll be able to add a voice message and a video message to your ad for even more people finding you in the search results. Be sure to use an alias different from your Yahoo used ID or you'll be a target for someone getting your email address and possibly invading your privacy.

Free basic memberships include these features:

• include up to 5 photos with your profile

• include a voice message once your profile has been approved

• include a video message once your profile has been approved

Yahoo Personals is a premium service, membership is required to send and reply to messages, but you'll be part of one of the largest online dating services once you've joined and be able to take advantage of a number of features that are only available to subscribed members. You can search for other members without subscribing, so you can see if it would be worthwhile for you to join to contact singles in your area before you pay.

Use Yahoo Instant Messenger to chat with other premium members.
